This timeline recounts the story of Sage Mandavya, who, unjustly punished for a childhood sin, confronted Lord Dharma (Yama). His subsequent curse forced the God of Justice’s mortal rebirth as Vidura, the wise counsellor of the Mahabharata.

Childhood Act (The Cause)
Event : As a child, Mandavya impales an insect on a blade of grass.
Key Details : This act, though done unwittingly, is later determined by Lord Dharma to be the karma that resulted in Mandavya’s punishment.
The Accusation
Event : Sage Mandavya is in deep silent meditation in his hermitage. A group of robbers hides their stolen goods and themselves there.
Key Details : The King’s chief officer and his attendants find the bounty and the thieves but wrongly conclude that the silent sage is the head of the robbers.
The Unjust Sentence
Event : Without verifying the facts, the King orders that the entire flock of robbers, including the sage, be impaled on a spear (or trident).
Key Details : The thieves die instantly, but Mandavya remains alive due to his mental strength achieved through penance. He earns the name ‘Ani-Mandavya’ (Mandavya with a stake within).
The King’s Realization
Event : Other sages gather at the hermitage and demand justice. The King learns of Mandavya’s supernatural powers and his own grave mistake.
Key Details : The King orders his attendants to remove the stake. Since the entire stake cannot be removed, only the outer part is cut, leaving the tip inside the sage’s body. The King begs for forgiveness, which Mandavya grants.
The Confrontation with Dharma
Event : At the twilight of his life, Mandavya visits Yama-lok and confronts Lord Dharma (Yama), demanding to know the sin that caused his suffering.
Key Details : Dharma reveals the sin was the childhood act of impaling an insect.
The Curse (The Effect)
Event : Mandavya argues that the act was committed before the age of 12 and thus was sinless according to scriptures. He curses Lord Dharma for unjustly punishing him.
Key Details : Mandavya curses Lord Dharma to be born as a mortal to a servant maid in his next birth. He also unilaterally raises the age of sinless acts to 14.
Dharma’s Rebirth
Event : Due to the curse, Lord Dharma is reborn as Vidura (half-brother of Dhritarashtra and Pandu) to a servant maid of Queen Ambalika.
Key Details : Vidura is born with unmatched knowledge of Dharma and statesmanship, fulfilling the curse’s condition while also becoming an embodiment of virtue.
