Treta Yuga (The Age of Sages)

The asura Dambhodbhava performs penance to the Sun God Surya, who grants him a boon of 1000 armours, which can only be destroyed by an immediate sacrifice of life.

The Boon

Event : The asura Dambhodbhava performs rigorous penance for 1000 years to appease the Sun God, Surya.
Surya denies immortality but grants Dambhodbhava the boon of 1000 armours (Sahasrakavacha). Each armour can only be destroyed by someone who has performed 1000 years of penance, and the destroyer must immediately die.

Treta Yuga (The Age of Sages)

Lord Vishnu appears to Murti and is born as the twin sages Nara and Narayana for the sole purpose of defeating Sahasrakavacha.

The Birth of Sages

Event : Dambhodbhava begins his path of Adharma (unrighteousness), wreaking havoc. Murti, the wife of Dharma, prays to Lord Vishnu to stop the menace.
Lord Vishnu grants Murti a boon, assuring her that he will be born as her son to defeat the demon. The Lord Vishnu avatar Narasimha takes the form of the twin sages Nara and Narayana, born to Murti and Dharma. They are inseparable and born for the sole purpose of defeating Sahasrakavacha.

Treta Yuga (The Age of Sages)

Nara and Narayana take turns fighting Sahasrakavacha for 1000-year cycles, with the one who fights falling dead and the other reviving them with the Maha Mrityunjaya mantra.

The Cycle of Combat

Event : Narayana fights Sahasrakavacha for 1000 years and successfully breaks one armour, then immediately falls dead as per the boon’s condition, while Nara meditates.
Nara wakes up and uses the Maha Mrityunjaya mantra (a boon gained from Lord Shiva) to revive Narayana.
Nara takes his brother’s place and fights Sahasrakavacha for the next 1000 years, breaking the second armour, and falling dead. Narayana revives Nara.
This cycle of fighting and reviving continues until 999 armours are destroyed.

Treta Yuga (The Age of Sages)

With only one armour left, Sahasrakavacha flees to Surya's abode, prompting Nara to curse the Sun God for protecting the demon.

The Curse

Event : With only one armour left, Sahasrakavacha flees the battle and takes refuge at Lord Surya’s abode.
When Surya refuses to surrender his devotee, Nara curses Surya to be born as a mortal in his next life. Surya accepts the curse to protect his devotee.

This entire episode marks the end of the Treta Yuga timeline.

Dwapara Yuga (The Age of Mahabharata)

The souls are reborn: Narayana becomes Krishna, Nara becomes Arjuna, and Sahasrakavacha becomes Karna, carrying the one remaining armour as his natural Kavacha.

Rebirth

Event : To fulfill the pending cause, the souls are reborn: Narayana becomes Krishna, and Nara becomes Arjuna.
Dambhodbhava/Sahasrakavacha is reborn as Karna, the son of Kunti and Lord Surya (carrying Surya’s fraction due to the curse). He is born with a natural armour (Kavacha) and earrings (Kundala), symbolizing the one remaining armour.

Dwapara Yuga (The Age of Mahabharata)

Karna with a bare, scarred chest and empty ears, handing over his golden armor and floating earrings to a disguised Indra, a symbol of his vow of charity.

The Sacrifice

Event : Just before the Kurukshetra War, Karna gives up his natural armour and earrings to Lord Indra (in disguise), adhering to his vow of charity.

Dwapara Yuga (The Age of Mahabharata)

Karna is slain by Arjuna on the 17th day of the Kurukshetra War, fulfilling the ancient purpose of the twin sages' birth.

The Final Destruction

Event : Karna is slain by Arjuna on the 17th day of the Kurukshetra War, officially fulfilling the purpose of the twin sages’ previous birth by destroying the final manifestation of the thousand-armoured demon.
